The non-French Canadians

So who are they ?

Although I knew things had changed I suppose I was still expecting English-speaking Canadians to be fairly distinct from their American neighbours (accent, origin etc). But the Scottish connection has pretty much disappeared apart from a few place names, and I can't distinguish Canadian from nearby American English.

Vancouver is (and perhaps always has been) resolutely turned towards the West (ie our East... and one person in two appears to be of Asian origin, mainly but by no means exclusively Chinese and Indian ever since their forefathers were brought over for the railroads.

Great city, sea, islands, mountains. We loved similar-location Seattle too which has also reinvented itself, but is perhaps a little less cosmopolitan, and very much tuned in to business success (Boeing, amazon, Starbucks (and academic excellence).

So what's the difference between the two countries ? Seems to boil down to politics, foreign and domestic, with Canada closer to our European style. Otherwise I couldn't really spot any differences - oh yes... I did see Eccles cakes on sale in Canada !
